O2 MAX Fitness

Archive for May, 2011

So you are home from college for the summer and are looking to get in better shape or back in shape right?

Try this for a mid-week workout when you are likely to be feeling a little tired….

30 minute moderate paced run  - need a little more oomph? mix in about 5-6 speed surges for about 10-15 seconds each.

If you are in the Los Angeles area and want to try out one of our Fitness Passports you can take one of our favorite Yoga Classes that combines a little toning, cardio & flexbility to help you get closer to the lean, toned look you want!

It is the perfect finish to a mid-week workout!!

Got questions? Want to try it out? Shoot us a message and we will get you started!

O2 MAX has some kids (ranging from 8-20) that are looking for workout buddies this summer to make training more affordable!!

How it works: Flexible scheduling 1 private session (in home or at one of the facilities we use) & 1-2 other workouts/week with some other kids. We have workouts that we package in with participating cycling, yoga, martial arts & fitness centers along with semi-private/small group workouts. This keeps the workouts affordable & gives everyone the personalization/individual attention they need as well to help them achieve their specific goals. We connect with kids over email and online after the workout to continue to help them with confidence, self esteem & to learn how to use fitness as a lifestyle.

If you plan on going away this summer or just need a combination of some personal coaching and some group programs/workouts we would love to help! Fitness is NOT A one size fits all and neither should the price be!

We have kids in the Beverly Hills, Santa Monica/Brentwood and Valley areas.

Feel free to ask us any questions!

Tonight I was reminded of why I love taking yoga classes to end the weekend/start the week off. I needed to use the bathroom before class started and there was a sign that said “We apologize for the inconvenience but due to a building maintenance emergency there is no water.” Being the multi-tasker that I am I also had brought my water bottle with me to fill it up at the water fountain which was next to the bathroom. I approached the bathroom the same time as a guy did and I set my water bottle down and decided to venture in despite the sign. It was all good-the water worked and I even got to wash my hands. But when I walked out the guy handed me my water bottle filled up and I was so confused. He says “I know we arent married and I am not hitting on your but I thought I would fill it up while I was waiting to use the bathroom.” I thanked him and walked away still smiling in amazement. It made me think:

1. I remember when I was at that gay bar and some guy walked up to me, felt my hair and said “oh my gosh I love your hair” and kept walking. It was one of the most awesome compliments.

2. That random act of kindness totally set my mood for yoga. It reminded me that there are people out there that are genuinely nice, authentic people.

I have had a love/hate relationship over the years until I found the type of class that really works for me. When I first started O2 MAX I was taking yoga classes at night. I went about 3 months without taking yoga and my back wasnt happy with me. I realized then that it became a necessity for me (I had fractured my back and broke a few other things in a bicycle accident in 2005). Yoga helped my back and my shoulder – TREMENDOUSLY.

I  had tried a few classes here and there but yoga was yoga to me. I got a 2 week pass from YogaWorks for $30 and took about 5 classes during that time. I got to try various types of classes and really understand which ones were not for me.

I learned that I love the more athletic type of classes (vinyasa flow, power yoga, core-power yoga)  that help you work on core/upper body strength but also really get you into your hip flexors-you know the areas that get really tight from all the other crazy stuff I do all week.

Depending on my mood it usually affects me differently. There have been (many) classes where I feel like Charlotte from Sex and the City - you know the episode where she goes to get acupuncture and is trying so hard to zone out the hustle and bustle of the city and stay calm. I am constantly have to talk to myself to stop my brain from working – a problem many entrepreneurs have

Then there have been times when my body is so tired from training over the week that all I can do is try to not collapse from tiredness.

Then there are times when it leaves me feeling super strong – mentally and physically and all stretched out and rejuvenated.

Tonight may have been one of my best yoga classes to date. The mood was definitely set with the act of kindness by the random guy who filled up my water bottle. But then when we were practicing hand stands I kicked up the furthest I had ever gotten up.

And then we finished with a deep hip opener and I got VERY far down which shocked me since I had ridden 42 miles yesterday and did an intense track workout this morning.  This made me really happy not only because I saw how quickly my body was recovering and adapting but also because I am excited to share this new stretch with one my clients tomorrow. She is a synchronized swimmer and had an amazing weekend competing. We spend a lot of time working on getting her core stronger while working on flexibility and strength to help with her splits.  So I left Yoga also feeling appreciative, empowered, strong, happy, focused and more knowledgeable.  I had learned something new that I get to start my week with. Namaste.

Many of us have maybe been too busy working, studying, making excuses or just not working hard enough! O2 MAX is challenging you this summer to get your BUTT moving, mix it up, try some new workouts, learn some different/more efficient ways to workout and as the saying goes “have your cake and eat it too”!

We have been using the last few weeks of May to get warmed up (humor us)!! Starting June 1 which is national running day we will officially begin our 3 month summer shape-up! It isn’t about getting into the best shape necessarily or losing a ton of weight. The goal is to learn different ways to workout, better ways to eat and shop for food and maybe push yourself to a new place-physically and mentally.  The end goal is about being fit, strong and healthy so you can follow your passions and be successful!!

O2 MAX is excited about its Youth Fitness Passport!! It is the best of all worlds! Get online fitness coaching to help you stay on top of your personal fitness goals, get access to tryout various workouts and fitness facilities without breaking anyone’s budget!

Try out our workout that we did at the Track!! You do not need any equipment and you can do it ANYWHERE! Ask us whatever you want  - happy to give some suggestions and modifications!!

Guaranteed to hit your core from all angles while getting your arms nice and strong too!

Pushups/Side Planks
Get on hands and toes (or knees), abs in and back straight. Do one pushup and as you come up, put the weight on the left side of the body, twist to the side while bringing the right arm up towards the ceiling in a side plank. Lower the arm back to the floor for another pushup and then twist to the other side. Repeat the series, alternating each side, for the desired length of time.
